Down To Earth Catholic Sunday 11/9/2016 Brief Version

Reflection for 11th september 2016 we are in Cycle 3: celebrating 24th Ordinary Sunday mass,Inviting us to analyze,

Value of repentance, value of Pardoning and value of humility by overcoming, pride and envy: in other word how to become down to earth catholic

First Let us analyze the value of Repentance to our life

Repentance, which literally means to turn, is the activity of reviewing one's actions and feeling contrition or regret for past wrongs. It generally involves a commitment to personal change and the resolve to live a more responsible and humane life.

Certain other religions KARMIC RELATIONSHIP relates to the principle of retribution justice determining a person's state of life and the state of his or her reincarnation as the effect of past deeds. 2. ( Theology) theosophy the doctrine of inevitable consequence. 3. destiny or fate.

Christianity does not support karmic relationship, and believes in one life. Hence there is no reincarnation, and you can easily identify about your sin, since it has caused not in unknown Period(before your present life).

Repentance: acts of penitent: catechism 1450-60; 1487-92 : they are : Careful examination of concise: contrition(or repentance) which is perfect when it is motivated by love of God and imperfect if it is rest on other motives and which includes the determination not to sin again. Confession, which consists in the telling of one's sins to the priest who in the name of christ grant forgiveness and determine the ways of satisfaction.

Interior penance
It is movement of a "contrite heart"(pslam 51:19) drawn by divine grace to respond to the merciful love of God. This entails sorrow for and abhorrence of sins committed, a firm purpose of not to sin again in the future and trust in the help of God. It is nourished by hope in divine mercy

Now Let us analyze the value of pardoning or forgiveness
Forgiveness like oil in an engine.:it keeps the wheels moving. Forgiveness is like gravity, invisible it's power, yet profound in it's effects. Jesus is the ultimate symbol of forgiveness. HE kept on believing his staff. He kept on giving them chance. Jesus has true sense of "try and try again" He always gave people another chance. A forgiving attitude gives forward motion. Forgiveness does not mean being a dormant or not using discretion in whom you deal with and how?  Forgiveness means allowing others to make mistakes while you and they keep on moving forward.
Peter , the one who pledged eternal faithfulness to Jesus, denied him 3 times publicly. It might have been difficult to Jesus to forgive, yet HE appeared to peter and forgave him, asking him to show his love now and by feeding his sheep.
Sometimes,as with Peter, the farther they fall, the deeper they will love. So Jesus forgave them.\

Last we analyze,How you Should convert from proud ness to humility.

Today, pordigal son's parabol shows us;
Elder bother's proud ness, has caused him to misunderstand about his father's action, while younger brother becoming down to earth, realizing, his own state of living, Repent and confess to his father, to remove his guilt of misdeed.

Sin of pride is an inordinate love of self: a super confidence and high esteem in your own abilities, which exaggerate your abilities, gifts and talents and ignores your weaknesses, and imperfections.
Pride is key to all other sins, because after you believe that you are more important than you actually are, you compensate for it when others don't agree with your judgment, by lying, cheating, stealing, insulting, ignoring etc. Although acknowledging your converted talents to energy is good, but be clear all these are coming from God.

Humility is best remedy for pride. Pride fools you into thinking that you are the source of your own greatness.

Do we resemble the older brother?.His problem is that he had set himself up as a judge. He had severed his father, so faithfully, day in, day out. He had never failed in his duty. He was proud of his accomplishments and took all the credit to himself. And as a result of his self centered attitude, He suffered from what might be called hardening of spiritual arteries: and because of his proud sense of personal achievement. God's compassion and forgiving love could find no place in him.

The young son takes off from home, spends his inheritance in sinful living, then repent and resolves to return home and make his confessions to his father. But the father waits for the boy,and when he sees him in  distance, he runs to the boy, empress him, kisses him and don't even listen to his confession! There has to be a party,a celebration, because" this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. HE WAS LOST AND IS FOUND"
Picture of moses leading to God

Today's reading:

1st reading:
Exodus 32:7-11,13-14 says" moses plead to God to spare his sinful people and the lord grant his prayer

2nd reading
1 TIM 1:12-17 : paul tells Timothy how the lord forgave his former sinfulness and granted him faith and love

Lk 15:1-32 : the parable of prodigal son, heaven rejoices when a sinner repents and returns home to God.

All 3 readings shows, God willingness or eagerness to forgive repentant sinners. In each reading someone or something is lost,is recovered, and there is, celebration.

The parable of Pordigal son remind us, the value of Repentance and confession!.

Church has 5 precepts or basic rules that has to be followed by catholics. They are

(1) You should attend Mass on sundays and on Holy days of obligation and remain free from work or activity that could impede the sanctification of such days.
(2) You shall confess your sins at least once a year
(3) You shall receive the sacrament of Eucharist at least during the easter season.
(4) You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the church
(5) You shall help to provide needs of the church.

You will see the value of confession from this.

In conclusion: it is important to keep the father's words in our hearts" My son, you are with me always, and everything I have is yours". Those are the Lords words to you today. You are with him always because HE has always being with you, and if you have it is not only by your own strength and courage but only by God's grace in you. All you can do is to celebrate and rejoice and give thanks. The Eucharist is the party, the banquet. Hopefully you feel at home at this celebration the lord is giving to you whether you are repentant sinner or innocent child in the family of God. You will never grow into mature catholic until you realize how much God has loved you and continue to love you, lavishly and pordigaly!. This parable is a living proof.
Finally, today readings provide very basic catholic life; your life swing in 2 state, With grace of God, and loosing touch of Him by sin.
In today's gospel prodigal son's story, when you analyze 2 sons and father, it shows the catholic life. You sin, go away from FAther, father is willing to receive you,by REPENTANCE and CONFESSION, you are with the father. On the other hand, you may be like the elder son, with the father and worried about the sinful younger bother of yours, indicating that you cannot judge any sinful man, since he is having free will always to Repent and confess.

Reflection points

(1) Are you leading your life similar to elder or younger bother in prodigal sons parable?
(2)How to convert your pride life to humility life?
(3) Forgiveness is like oil in the engine, how it keeps the Wheels moving?
(4) When you believe karma, Can you Repent for your sins?
(5) What are the 5 PRECEPTS of Catholic church?

Today church Invite us to analyze, about how to become matured Catholic

Maturity; is a ability to face life in an appropriate manner. This response is generally learned rather than instinctive.
Maturity changes with age,but it is not necessary that it increases with age.
You may be born Catholic, have you advance about knowing Holy Trinity/Mary&saints, beyond the knowledge, that you have acquired from school?.

Specialist doctor has learned biology at school. Will that be enough for him to practice as a matured professional?

Similarly, you have to increase maturity of Catholicism Otherwise you are similar to a man,who lay foundation for a building &unable to finish the work.

Church has basically organize for you to gather such knowledge in 3yr cycle(each yr/5 seasons)of sundayreadings

 Let's go thru' today's readings:
1st reading:
Wisdom: 9:13-18 says' Human Wisdom acquired by study, needs to be fortified by the gift of divine wisdom

2 nd reading:
Paul (Phim 9-10,12-17) says paul plead for Christ like treatment for a slave he is sending back to the owner, Philemon

Gospel Lk 14:25-33 says' Jesus lays down conditions for being his followers.

From the readings, one can immediately wonder What should have been the reaction from Jews, how terrible His words must have sounded to them, for whom the family meant everything. He goes on to say that they have to take up your cross and follow Him. The cross is the most despised symbol in all Israel, for it was on a cross that the hated Romans executed troublesome Jews.

Readings are clear,if you want to become Jesus follower, you have to surrender your life to HIM, with no divided loyalties

In order to further analyze this, we have to first check, what Jesus has asked us to do.
When you go against his wishes, you say it is Sin means avoiding bad habits in your life. Mortal SIN is any act or thought of yours, that turns away from God,embracing something else in place. IT IS DEADLY TO LIFE OF GRACE,B'COS IT INSULT THE HONOR OF GOD,& INJURES your SOUL.

3 conditions are needed for a sin to be mortal.

(1)GRAVE Matter -act itself is intrinsically evil &immoral:ex murder/rape/incest/perjury/adultery,etc
(2)FULL KNOWLEDGE: you should know your action is evil& immoral
(3)DELIBRATE CONSENT: you should freely choose to commit the act or plan to do it.

VENIAL sins only meet 1or2 conditions of MORTAL SIN,& is less serious, and aren't deadly to your life,it does not kill grace within:

Avoidng sin means, that you lead your life with good habits and avoid bad habits.

Church maintained that 7 vices in particular lead to break one or more10 commandments
These particular bad habits are called the 7 deadly sins because, according to Catholicism, they are mortal sins- sins that kills the sanctifing grace. When you commit a mortal sin, you forfeit heaven and opt for hell by your own free will and actions.

Let's analyze 7 deadly sins I.e Pride, Envy, lust, anger, gluttony, greed and sloth. and remedial acton that you have to take for each

Sin of pride is an inordinate love of self: a super confidence and high esteem in your own abilities, which exagerate your abilities, gifts and talents and ignores your weaknesses, and imperfections.

Pride is key to all other sins, because after you believe that you are more important than you actually are, you compensate for it when others don't agree with your judgment. by lying, cheating, stealing, insulting, ignoring etc. Although acknowledging your converted talents to energy is good, but be clear all these are coming from God.

Humility is best remedy for pride. Pride fools you into thinking that you are the source of your own greatness.

Envy: start demanding,"WHY SHOULD NOT I HAVE EVERY THING THAT OTHERS HAVE?". We are envious of another's goods and jealous of our own. DEEPLY ROUTED JEALOUSY CAN LEAD TO LOSE HEALTH BOTH PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL. Paul says Love is not jealious or envious. In order to counter envy, you should develop Meakness and kindness in your life. Pl refer genesis 37-47 about Joseph and his brothers

Lust;it is normal and healthy to be attracted to and to appreciate the opposite sex. That is not lust, and it is not considered a sin. Lust is looking at, imagining and even treating others as mere sex objects to serve your own physical pleasures, rather than an individuals made in the image and likeness of God. Hence it is dis orientated love that seeks not the other but personal individualistic pleasure and satisfaction in everything we do,hence excludes all personal consideration for the sake of sensate experience.

Chastity which moderate desire, is the best remedy for lust. Without chastity, human become like animals that copulate when in heat. Animals have sex with instincts, but human have the gift of reason and can choose when and with whom to be intimate.

Anger:  you have no control over what angers you, but you do have control over what you do after you become angry. The deadly sin of anger is the sudden outburst of emotion-namely hostility-sustaining thoughts about the desire for revenge.

Developing patience, is the virtue that allows you to adopt and endure evil, without harboring any destructive feelings, is the best countermeasure. For anger. When you give yourself the time and opportunity to cool off, anger dissipates and more practical concerns come to the front line.

Gluttony: is immoderate eating or drinking too much alcohol. Enjoying delightful dinner is not a sin. Gluttony is freely choosing to over-consume and is voluntary, and merely requires self control and moderation. Periodic fasting, restricting the amount of food you eat and abstinence, avoiding meat or some favorite food is the best defense against gluttony. Unlike dieting where the goal is to lose weight, fasting and abstinence, purify the soul by controlling, desires of the body. Occasionally giving up favorite food and beverages promotes self control and temperance.

Greed:
Inordinate love of desire for earthly possessions. Sometimes this is called as avarice. Gospel refers such a greedy rich man dieing in the same night.. Pl refer LK 12:16-21.
Greed apex of selfishness has ruined marriages, families and friendships.

Generosity is the best weapon against greed freely given some your possessions away, specially to those less fortunate is considered the perfect solution to greed and avarice. Generosity promotes detachment for material things, which come and go. They can be replaced but people can't.

Sloth is laziness, particularly when it concerns prayer and spiritual life. It centers on doing nothing or trivial things. SLOTH ALWAYS WANTING TO REST AND RELAX, with no desire or intentions of making a sacrifice or doing something for others. It is an aversion to work- physical,mental, and spiritual. Sloth breeds indifference, which prevents joy from ever being experienced. Church says that evil habit of being physically present but not consciously participating or being careless in fulfilling your religious duties is also a sin of sloth. You will get some idea if you go thru' Proverb 24:30-34;
Spiritual laziness can only be overcome by practicing the virtue of diligence, which is a habit of keeping focused and paying attention to the work at hand- be it the work of employment or the work of God.Diligence in all things ensures that you don't become idle and start daydreaming leaving reality for fantasy island.

Catholics like all other human beings, are asked to practice virtue and avoid vice.
It generally advce to be God centered in all your actions.

In Conclusion
Today readings challenges every one of us; who claim to be catholics,we have to stand up and to be counted. The world is full of people who called as Christians. But how many are committed to Jesus? How many actually live this Gospel?. How many have tried to place their lives & future in the hands of God or in His care?.
In addition to knowing and practicing to live with 10 commandments with love and pardoning, one has to be vigilant not to attract the 7 deadly sins, to be a matured catholic.
Hence,you avoid pride,Envy, lust, anger,gluttony,greed,sloth,with HUMILITY, KINDNESS,CHASTITY,PATIENCE,PERIODIC FASTING,GENORASITY &DILIGENCE.

God Bless you.

Reflections of this sunday readings:

Church invite you to analyze how to remove pride from your life and become humble, and develop humility.

Humble, humility and pride has to be clearly understood by any human.

What is Pride
Our 1st parents wanted to be more than they were, and they wanted to be like God. Their pride was beginning of wide stream of evil to which we all contribute when ever we sin.

Proud person is self centred NOT God or people centered. He cannot be told anything b'cos,he has all answers. He is completely satisfied himself & dissatisfied about other people lives. He never wants to receive anything from others. He will give not out of generosity but to gain control on others. DESPITE APPEARANCE TO THE CONTRARY HE IS INSECURE &TRIES TO MAKE UP HIS INSECURITY BY BOASTING & VAINGLORY IN ALL ITS MAIFESTATIONS!.
DON'T TRY TO JUDGE WHETHER OTHER PERSON IS PROUD OR NOT.
Check& correct U'self if U'r Proud.

How to overcome PRIDE &become humble?

A humble person knows his strengths and weaknesses. Humble person seek to develop strengths and talents he possesses.
In accepting truth about him self: he give the credit to God who endowed him with talents and give him the obligation of developing. And using them for the good of others. He may certainly take pleasure in work well done. so long he realized that very impetus to do the work comes from God.

So ,be who you are and what you are, no less. and yet never be satisfied with your knowledge, especially about Jesus
With you ability to love, your generosity and spirit of service.

While understanding Pride and humbleness, how to develop Humility?

What is humility? It is the knowing and Appreciating truth, about yourself; it is integrity, sincerity, honesty. It neither over estimate or underestimate your self, your talents and abilities.

Now  let us reflect today's readings:

1st Reading:
Sir 3:17-18, 20, 28-29 gives worthy religious Advice about our need for humility and being attentive to God's Word

2nd Reading
Paul to Hebrew Heb 12:18-19,22-24 says for the author of Hebrews, mount Zion(Jerusalem) is an image of the heavenly Jerusalem to which we draw near without fear

Gospel LK 14:1,7-14 says: Jesus illustrate true humility and hospitality; invites those who cannot return the favor:

The 1st reading says the greater you are, the more humble you should behave, and then you will find favor with the lord.(Si 3:18)
In the Gospel Lk14:11 says Every one who raises himself up will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be raised up.

All of us have a rough idea of what is humility?. It is not pride. But neither it is pretense. It is not a case of pretending to be worse than you are!. Nor should it prevent you from legitimate pride in your own achievements. If we do something well, we are entitled to please about it. Humility is not negative virtue at all. It should not undermine confidence or enterprise or buzz you get when some projects goes well. Humility is a very +ve virtue. If it is not about having your nose in the air, it certainly about having your foot on the ground.

In fact the latin word of humus, from which humility comes means ground or earth. So. Humble person is down to earth- no airs and graces, feet firmly planted, things in proper perspective. If we practice humility, you are no longer of losing the run of ourselves or getting too big for our boots in our dealings with others and with God

Although humility is a lowly virtue, it has very high origins. It starts up with God. What we call the incarnation. God becoming flesh. God becoming man. God coming down was the greatest exercise in humility, the world has ever known. The 2nd greatest  exercise was the manner in which Jesus lived himself. Born in a stable, lived in an obscure Villege, working in a carpenters shop, traveling the road without roof over his head, mixing with publicans and sinners, crucified in complete nakedness on a cross. It is extraordinary, when you think about it.

HE EMPTIED HIMSELF TAKING THE FORM OF  SLAVE...HE WAS HUMBLER YET, EVEN TO ACCEPTING DEATH ON A CROSS.(PH 2:7-8). NO WONDER HE COULD SAY(and Without pride)" LERN FROM ME, FOR I AM GENTLE, And HUMBLE IN HEART,AND YOU WILL FIND REST OF YOUR SOUL" (mt 11:29)

There are 2 obvious ways in which we can fail to imitate Christ in His practice of humility.

The first with dealing with others: should be careful to humble on others, because they are poor, because we think their accent or their address is not quite posh as ours. Our ambition in life is not to impress others, but to serve them. We should be careful in talking to others; egotism,my friends, my connections,my possessions,my back ground, me ego etc

our ambition in life should be to make people conscious their own dignity their than our own importance."Love one another just as I have loved you" Jn 13:34. OUR HUMALITY MAKES US FEEL FREE AND MAKE OTHERS FEEL GOOD.

The 2nd obvious way in which we can offend against humility is in our dealing with GOD. And if humility is to mean anything here, we need strong and abiding sense of creature hood. It is to God that we owe our very existence. Every breath, we breath, every moment we live, every gift we have is God's. the humble person is aware of that and grateful for it.
Could it be true, I wonder, that the more self sufficient we become materially, the less we depend on God.
In the second reading says developing humility, make you to be close with
God without any fear.

In conclusions today, church showing us,Not merely willing to be humble. HUMILITY is a work of life time. learn from your failures& mistakes,be patient with your self,as God is. Otherwise you will be mechanical catholic, depriving your own happiness.

God Bless you!
